the low down according to mon – july 6

Hello all and welcome to “the low down according to mon” where I wrap up the top celebrity stories of the week for you. After the TomKat divorce shock of last weekend, I wasn’t sure if there would be anything that would top that, but luckily Hollywood has been keeping busy. As always, remember to head on over to KiKi & Tea at 4pm to check out my highlights edition. All of this information was accurate when posted at 9AM (AEST)…

The biggest couple news of the century (OK, maybe year) is still the story surrounding Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise‘s divorce after over five years of marriage. Questions have been raised that the Church of Scientology, where Tom is quite high up, is the main cause of the divorce, with people asking “did she really become a Scientologist?” and places reporting that the ‘church’ has been tailing Katie, which they firmly shut down as well as rumours that Suri will be joining Scientology’s Sea Org. There have also been messages of support from ex-Scientologists, offering Katie their help. Tom’s son, Connor from his previous relationship with Nicole Kidman, tweeted about the divorce on Sunday saying “#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever”. Katie has since been pictured sans wedding ring and out with Suri where she told a reporter “I’m alright. Thank you”. Click here for some extra info surrounding the divorce. Including the fact that Tom has divorced all three wives when they’ve been 33. Despite reports of an emergency scheduled hearing, Katie will be appearing in front of a family court on July 17 at an order to show cause hearing and nothing else. On a side note, I’m not giving you this information so we can gloat and yes, I know I said I was fist pumping when I heard the news, but any marriage breakdown is sad and despite what everyone else has been saying, I genuinely was surprised as they always seemed so happy and in love and I thought they were in it for life, it’s still sad news but I can’t give you a round up in celeb news without mentioning this.

Rumour has it that Justin Theroux proposed to Jennifer Aniston on their recent trip to Paris and America’s Sweetheart said no. According to a ‘source’ “She feels like she only got the proposal because she pushed for it. She doesn’t want a guy marrying her because he feels some sort of pressure”. She was apparently upset when it happened as she was expecting it and they had a fight. I’m calling bullshit on this story. I don’t think there was a proposal and I definitely don’t think there was a proposal because she made her feel that he should.

Hilaria tweeted this pic of her wedding bands

It’s been a big week for Alec Baldwin, he not only married Hilaria Thomas, he also quit Twitter and donated lots of money. According to the LA TimesAlec Baldwin flashed a big smile to photogs and fans outside St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York on Saturday, then proceeded inside to wed his yoga-instructor sweetheart. “Hilaria Thomas and Alec Baldwin were married this evening … ,” rep and friend Matthew Hiltzik said Saturday via Twitter, “sharing the occasion with family and friends inside the Cathedral, and Alec warmly receiving congratulations from well-wishing fans on his way into the service.” On Monday, Alec tweeted “It’s been fun” before deactivating his Twitter account. He has since been tweeting from the Alec Baldwin Foundation page. This past week, Alec donated $500,000 to the Roundabout Theatre Company (as well as donating $1 million to the New York Philharmonic previously) and stressed the importance of the arts, “The only reason I’m publicizing it is for people to please not forget the arts. Most money goes to medical causes, then alma mater then the arts comes fourth or fifth.

The magic ended for Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright and her fiancé Jamie Campbell Bower as they ended their engagement. Bonnie has left the London townhouse the couple was sharing but the split is apparently amicable. They were together for two years, getting engaged after dating for six months.

Everyone’s favourite pop prince Justin Bieber finally has something that most other 18-year-olds (American ones) have: a high school diploma! The Biebs was in the 2012 graduating class of St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, Ontario. He didn’t attend the ceremony with Dan Parr, a superintendent with the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board saying “I guess if it happened quietly it’s because Justin chose to keep aspects of his education quiet”. Congrats Justin!

The BET Awards happened this past week and you can see a full list of winners here but the best part of the night was watching Kanye West get Kanye’d by friend Jay Z, check it out below:

All you Glee fans out there, you’ll be happy to know that all the cast members will be returning for season 4! It’s unknown who will be regular cast members in the sense that they’ll appear in every episode, but you won’t have to be missing any of your favourites as they’ll still be on your screens.

I wasn’t entirely convinced that Sarah Michelle Gellar was expecting baby number two, but after seeing this photo of her with daughter, Charlotte, it’s pretty obvious there’s a baby in that belly so congratulations to SMG and hubby Freddy Prinze Jr, they are such a lovely couple and make incredibly cute children.

Congratulations are in order for Josh Lucas and wife Jessica who welcomed a bouncing baby boy this past week. Noah Rev Maurer was born in New York and weighed a healthy 9 pounds 4 ounces. Josh and Jessica married in private earlier this year and announced they were expecting.

After getting married a month ago, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves announced they are expecting baby number three! On the 4th of July, Matthew tweeted “Happy Birthday America, more good news, Camila and I are expecting our 3rd child, God bless, just keep livin”. Baby will have a big brother and sister, Levi, 3 and Vida, 2. They make very attractive children and I’m sure baby #3 will be as well!

Some more congratulations are in order as Claire Danes and hubby Hugh Dancy are expecting their first child. Claire’s rep confirmed this news to PEOPLE Magazine. Congratulations!

He might be a good actor, but he most definitely doesn’t seem like a nice person. It seems like I’m not the only person who thinks Mel Gibson could definitely do with some people skills, his stepmother has taken a restraining order out against him. Teddy Joye Hicks Gibson filed for a restraining order against her stepson, claiming that he has spat in her face, is aggressive towards her and deliberately sabotaged her marriage to his father, Hutton Gibson (he filed for divorce from her last month after marrying in 2001). It’s rumoured that Hutton’s heart condition caused arguments over treatments and resulted in the split.

CNN journalist and host of his own show, Anderson Cooper, came out this week. In a letter, published by Andrew Sullivan of the Daily Beast, Anderson said “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud”. Notoriously quiet about his private life, Anderson addressed rumours so that people didn’t think he was ashamed of his sexuality.

I love biopics, especially when the actors and actresses who play the famous people bare a striking resemblance to the people they are playing. I don’t know how I missed it, but there is a movie being made about the latter years of Princess Diana‘s life, Caught In Flight, set to be released on 2013. Aussie actress, Naomi Watts has stepped up to the challenge and my goodness does she look the part! Photos have been emerging from the set of German director Oliver Hirschbiegel‘s film on Diana (click here for a glimpse at the iconic black dress she wore in 1997). The film will focus on her relationship with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan, as well as looking at her time with Dodi Fayed, who she was with at the time she died. The movie will include her death, aged 36, in a car in a Paris tunnel in 1997 with Dodi.

In other biopic news, Liz & Dick, which sees Lindsay Lohan taking on the role of Elizabeth Taylor has wrapped production. “Lindsay successfully wrapped late last night and the movie is done,” her rep, Steve Honig, confirmed. I can’t wait to see the Lifetime movie and I really hope it is the start of Lindsay’s glorious comeback.

Seth MacFarlane‘s comedy Ted, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis came out on top of the US Box Office raking in an estimated $54.1million. In second was Magic Mike with $39.2million (I’m honestly surprised it didn’t make more) and Pixar’s Brave came in third with $34million.

Legendary television star, Andy Griffiths, died this week at the age of 86. In a statement made by Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie “Mr Griffith passed away this morning at his home peacefully and has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island”. Per the actors instructions, he was buried on his property in Roanoke Island (North Carolina) within five hours of his death. His cause of death is not known, though could potentially have been from heart problems as he underwent a quadruple heart-bypass back in 2000. Stars tweeted their sadness at the passing of Andy with director Ron Howard saying “Andy Griffith His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations & shaped my life I’m forever grateful RIP Andy.” He leaves behind daughter, Dixie and third wife Cindi Knight.

Comic actor, Eric Skyes died at the age of 89. According to his manager, Norma Farnes, the funny man died in his home after a short illness. Along with writing radio shows with Spike Milligan, he also wrote scripts for Peter Sellers and appeared in The Others and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

After a quick move to Dallas to play for the Mavericks, Lamar Odom and wifey Khloe Kardashian Odom will be moving back to LA after being traded to the LA Clippers. While it’s not back to his beloved Lakers, at least it’s still in the NBA and back home. For all the sporting info that means nothing to me, you can look here. Sister in law Kim Kardashian tweeted “Congrats RealLamarOdom!!! You are officially a Clipper! Best news ever!!!” which Khloe retweeted. Kourtney also chimed in “I am team RealLamarOdom wherever he goes…but he is a Clipper baby and now I am team Clippers! Such a blessing! Supporting my brother Lam!”

There’s nothing like seeing some PDA between one of my favourite celeb couples, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. Why are they one of my favourites? Because they actually keep their relationship quiet and therefore, it seems to be legit. I love this video that a fan took at a recent Coldplay concert where Chris jumped off the stage to kiss his wife, adorable!!

I know it’s a sneaky pap shot but how cute is the picture of Katie and Suri? They look so alike and so happy playing silly games together! (although I maintain she also looks like Tom and therefore do not buy into any silly paternity rumours).

Lots of babies on the way too 🙂

Naomi Watts with very silly hair, though I now understand why. I still don’t get the fascination with making movies about historical events that are within living memory of most of the population, though. I reckon a bit of distance (like 20-30 years) would make for better biopics.

And glee? I stopped watching ages ago. Wore out its welcome in about season two. The network needs to put that one to sleep.

They look so happy, it’s very sweet to see, and I don’t buy into the whole “it’s not his baby either”.

I love biopics but I feel that this will be quite controversial, I wonder how William and Harry feel about it, it will be interesting.

I stopped watching Glee at the beginning of season three, it got too hectic.

Yeah that’s kind of what I was thinking too. My mum died the same year as Princess Diana and my brother and I are roughly the same ages as William and Harry and it would be weird to have to re-live that all again (and not for the first time either). I follow Rosanne Cash on twitter and she has commented several times that she can’t deal with the film Walk the Line that deals with her parents’ divorce and her dad and (much-loved) stepmum getting together, even though it all happened 30-40 years earlier. Not only was it a particularly painful decade of her family life played out in 2 hours, the film came out within a year of the deaths of her parents and stepmum.

And the other thing is that sometimes we actually have a clearer perspective on things several decades later and after most of the main players have died rather than 15 years later when most of the characters involved are still living and working and generally still in the middle of their own stories. But the world moves so fast these days: we remake movies that came out less than a decade ago…

I feel that for biopics, it would be much better to make them once the people involved are dead so as to not upset people by the portrayals of struggles. But I understand why film companies don’t do this.

    • moniquefischle · July 6, 2012

Oh and I love that there are so many babies on the way!!

      • melissasavage · July 6, 2012

I know! And they seem to grow up so fast. I can’t believe how big Charlotte Prinze is!
