Today is the day!
Today is the day the largely anticipated The Hunger Games hits cinemas around the world (well, last night, but whatever). I’m a recent convert to The Hunger Games, having only read the trilogy by author Suzanne Collins last month. I read for the simple reason that I wanted to know what everyone was talking about and I generally prefer to read the book before I see the film.
I wrote over at Kiki & Tea why I thought The Hunger Games will be better than Twilight (you can read that here). But really, the series are so unbelievably different that you can’t compare them.
For those who are unaware, THG is set in post apocalyptic Panem (where North America used to be) and each year, a boy and a girl from each district (there are 12 districts and then the Capitol) between the ages of 12-18 are selected as tributes to fight to the death in a startling reality television show, The Hunger Games. Messed up, right?
After District 13 planned an uprising against the Capitol and was demolished, The Games were created to remind the Districts that the Capitol will always control them and will annihilate anyone who tries to start a rebellion. On the day of the Reaping (when the tributes are picked) of the 74th Annual Hunger Games, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in place of her 12-year-old sister Prim.
From Kiki & Tea post
The reviews are in and at the time of writing, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 91% based on 91 reviews. While not all reviews have been favourable (ABC show At The Movies with Margaret and David gave the film 1.5/5 stars), there have been just as many positive ones, with E! Online giving it a A- rating).
I’ll be seeing the movie in the next few days and will post a review here ASAP.
