christmas movie #5: the family stone

The Christmas season is now upon us (and has been for quite some time), so I decided in keeping up with the Christmas spirit, I’d let you all in on the secret of my top five favourite Christmas movies. To build up suspense, I thought I’d start from number five and work my way up to number one. To begin, we have:

The Family Stone (2005)

This is a bit of a lesser known Christmas movie in Australia and while my sister doesn’t really like it, I think it’s great fun.

Here’s a brief plot overview:

Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney) decides to take his girlfriend, uptight Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker) back home to fictional town Thayer, Connecticut to meet his bohemian family. Everett’s laid back family consists of mother Sybil (Diane Keaton), father Kelly (Craig T Nelson), stoner brother Ben (Luke Wilson), married with kids sister Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser), deaf and gay brother Thad (Tyrone Giordano) and his partner Patrick (Brian J White) and younger mean sister Amy (Rachel McAdams).

With the exception of Ben, everyone in the family seems to have an aversion to Meredith and her uptight ways. She accidentally ends up alienating and insulting almost every member of the family, with the “guidance” of Amy. (FYI, like in Mean Girls, Rachel McAdams plays a bitch, though just a different kind).

After Meredith’s sister Julie (Claire Danes) comes to save her, interesting things start to happen in the Morton house.

I won’t say anything else, as I don’t want to ruin the plot of the movie, but it really is a great Christmas movie with lots of funny and sweet moments and only a tiny number of really uncomfortable ones!
