demi moore files for divorce

After months of speculation, Demi Moore released a statement to The Associated Press confirming rumours that she will be divorcing her husband of six years, Ashton Kutcher. The statement read:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.

Despite having his Twitter managed by others, Ashton took to the social media website to comment on the end of his marriage and it sounds like it came directly from him:

When mentioning values and vows, it is almost confirming that rumours that Ashton cheated on his wife were true. Numerous stories of his infidelity have been the subject of headlines, with the most prominent being him sleeping with 22-year-old Sarah Leal on the eve of this sixth wedding anniversary and rumours that he is the father of ex-girlfriend January Jones‘ baby Xander.

Unlike with most Hollywood break ups, I was really sad to hear this news and I genuinely hoped that they would defy the odds and stay together. The romance was an unlikely one, with a sixteen year age gap (Demi, 49 and Ashton, 33), and, after marrying in September 2005, maintaining a close relationship with Demi’s ex-husband and father of her three children, Bruce Willis.

There was always a genuine affection between the two of them and my heart goes out to them both. While we don’t know the circumstances and can only speculate, at least they actually tried. Six years is a decent effort, unlike 72 days…
